More Than Nails: The Heart Behind Sindy’s Nail Studio in Richards Bay
For Sindy, a nail appointment is about more than the finished set. It is a chance to create, connect and give someone a space to relax, talk and leave feeling a little more confident.

A nail appointment may begin with colour, shape and design, but for Sindy, the experience goes much further.
At Sindy’s Nail Studio in Richards Bay, the time spent across the table from a client is also about conversation, confidence, creativity and giving someone a moment away from everyday life.
Richards Bay Hub asked Sindy about building her own small business, the relationships formed with clients and why every set of nails carries a little more than polish.
Sindy’s responses below are published exactly as supplied.
Before Sindy’s Nail Studio became a business, what first made you fall in love with doing nails, and when did you realize you wanted to turn that passion into something of your own?
I first fell in love with nails because I enjoyed being creative and seeing the difference a beautiful set of nails could make to someone’s confidence. What started as something I enjoyed doing gradually became something I realized I could build into a business of my own. I wanted to create a space where I could do something I love while also making people feel good about themselves. That’s when Sindy’s Nail Studio started becoming more than just a passion — it became something I wanted to grow and take seriously.

Because your studio works by appointment, you get to spend one-on-one time with each client. What do you want someone to feel from the moment they sit down with you until they leave?
I want my clients to feel comfortable, welcomed and cared for. I want them to feel like they can relax, be themselves and enjoy their time here. For me, it’s not only about the nails. It’s about the whole experience. When they leave, I want them to feel beautiful, confident and happy that they took that time for themselves.
“For me, it’s not only about the nails. It’s about the whole experience.”

Has there ever been a client or moment that reminded you how much conversation and care can mean to someone?
Absolutely. Over time, I’ve realised that people often come to an appointment carrying much more than you can see. Sometimes a client just needs someone to listen, laugh with them or give them a safe space to talk. There have been moments where I’ve realised that the appointment meant much more to someone than simply getting their nails done. It reminds me that what I do gives me an opportunity to make someone’s day a little better, even through something as simple as conversation and care.

Your work is very creative. What goes through your mind when you're creating a new set, and what does it feel like when a client looks at the finished result and genuinely loves it?
I love the creative side of nails because there are so many possibilities. I think about what will suit the client, their personality, their hands and sometimes even what they have in mind before we start. I enjoy taking an idea and turning it into something they can actually wear. The best feeling is when I finish a set and the client looks at their nails and you can genuinely see that they love them. That reaction makes all the time, effort and attention to detail worth it.

Building a small local business is not always easy. What has kept you going during the difficult or quiet periods, and what makes you keep choosing this work?
There have definitely been difficult and quiet periods, but I remind myself why I started in the first place. I’m building something that belongs to me, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. My clients and the support I receive from the people around me also motivate me to keep going. Every returning client, every recommendation and every happy customer reminds me that I’m creating something meaningful. I know that growth takes time, and I’d rather keep learning, improving and moving forward than give up when things become difficult.

If someone in Richards Bay has never booked with Sindy’s Nail Studio before, what would you want them to know about you, your studio and the way you treat the people who sit across from you?
I would want them to know that when they book with me, they’re not just booking a nail appointment. I genuinely care about the person sitting across from me. I take pride in my work, I pay attention to detail and I want every client to feel comfortable and appreciated. My studio is a space where you can come in, take a break from everyday life, enjoy some time for yourself and leave feeling good. I’m still growing as a business, but I’m passionate about what I do and I put a lot of heart into every client and every set of nails.
